Bright Magnus Pray for Us: St. Magnus Way

Orkney Islands, Scotland - Summer 2027

Off the coast of northern Scotland, lie the windswept Orkney Islands, home to neolithic ruins older than the pyramids, a circle of standing stones as impressive as Stonehenge, a chapel created out of refuse by Italian prisoners of war, and St. Magnus’ Way, the pilgrimage path that honors the Viking saint beheaded by his rival at Easter 1117.

“Pilgrimage is premised on the idea that the sacred is not entirely immaterial, but that there is a geography of spiritual power.”

— Rebecca Solnit, Wanderlust: A History of Walking
